Polonnaruwa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, served as the medieval capital of Sri Lanka after the fall of Anuradhapura. This well-preserved archaeological city is renowned for its impressive Gal Vihara rock-cut Buddha statues, the majestic Royal Palace complex, and the sprawling Quadrangle of religious buildings. Visitors can admire the elaborate Lankatilaka Temple, the circular Vatadage, and ancient irrigation systems that reflect the engineering brilliance of the era.
